When it comes to Ontario wines, few regions are as unique and promising as Prince Edward County. Known for its rugged landscapes, proximity to large bodies of water, and distinctive terroir, it has become a hotspot for producing cool-climate varietals like Pinot Noir. One such wine that stands out from the pack is Redtail Vineyards' 2023 Estate Pinot Noir. At $39, this bottling is an intriguing expression of the County and a lovely showcase of what makes this region special.
Our 2023 Estate Pinot Noir has caught the attention of critics, who highlight its elegant, terroir-driven character.
Michael Godel describes it as “lithe and bright,” capturing the rugged beauty of Prince Edward County’s shores. He praises winemaker Renan Theilloux’s subtle approach, comparing his style to a musician interpreting a classic. With its sharp, focused profile, this wine authentically reflects its terroir. Godel recommends enjoying it between 2024 and 2027.
David Lawrason notes that this Pinot Noir is light-bodied, tender, and well-balanced, with mild redcurrant and cherry fruit, a touch of florality, and well-integrated oak spice. Its tart, juicy palate is complemented by easy tannins, leading to a good, lingering finish.
John Szabo adds that this Pinot, from Redtail’s Big Bay and Hollow Ridge vineyards, presents a pale red-garnet color and a fragrant, fruit-forward nose with just-ripe white raspberry and strawberry, backed by subtle wood spice. The palate is sleek and fluid, with minimal friction, light tannins, and a surprisingly long finish for its delicate body. Szabo highlights the wine's unexpected density of flavors and appealing sapidity on the finish, calling it a delicate yet deceptively structured, accomplished wine.
If you’re looking for a wine that expresses both the spirit of its origin and the artistry of its winemaker, the Redtail Vineyards 2023 Estate Pinot Noir will not disappoint.
